New frontiers for new learning

Diversity as our strength

Many of our grade two students have been exploring cultures and celebrations recently through the social studies program. It is amazing to hear them talk about various celebrations, faith days and cultural events they and their families participate in each year. I learned that our students observe or celebrate the following: Eid, The Sabbath, Diwali, Ramadan, Wedding Days, Quinceañera, birthdays, Saint Joseph’s Day, Chinese New Year, Jamaica Day and Christmas. They had an opportunity to learn about themselves as well as their classmates. It was a special opportunity to celebrate the diversity not only in our school, but in our country. Finding opportunities within our programs, on an ongoing basis, to create inclusive learning environments honours the spirit of Ontario’s Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy as well as our own Board’s Antiracism and Ethnocultural Policy. Our school’s Together We’re Better committee is also considering different ways to build inclusive learning opportunities at our school.  Collectively, they help remind us that our diversity of cultures, backgrounds, abilities and learning styles are also strengths of our school and community.
